Are you planning on studying abroad somewhere other than Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand?
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. It draws on a broad definition of national security that includes not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including (but not limited to) sustainable development,
environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. While Boren typically funds only academic term and full-year programs, students in STEM fields can also receive funding for summer study abroad programs.
In exchange for funding, recipients commit to working in the federal government for a minimum of one year. http://www.borenawards.org/boren_scholarship/basics.html
